Lavender in History and Folklore

In the 16th century lavender was believed to ward off disease, and plague doctors packed their beaked masks with lavender and other aromatic herbs.

Modern aromatherapy traces its name to a French chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé. After burning his hand in a laboratory explosion in 1910, he treated the injury with lavender oil and credited it with his recovery. The story is told in many versions, some more dramatic than his own account, but it is the reason he went on to coin the word aromathérapie.

Lavender Flower

True lavender or lavandin

Most of what is sold as lavender oil is not the same plant.

Lavandula angustifolia is true lavender, also called English lavender. Softer, sweeter, lower in camphor. This is the species used in sleep and relaxation blends and the one that suits skin.

Lavandula x intermedia, or lavandin, is a hybrid. It yields far more oil per hectare, which makes it cheaper, and it smells sharper and more medicinal because of its higher camphor content. Most budget lavender oil and most lavender-scented household product is lavandin.

TANAMERA Lavender Essential Oil is Lavandula angustifolia.
